FOR THERAPISTS

Jojoba Oil for Massage: A Guide for Therapists and Clinics

Massage therapists go through a lot of oil. The right carrier needs to glide well, feel pleasant on the skin, keep well in the treatment room and come at a sensible price per treatment.

Golden jojoba oil ticks many of those boxes. This guide covers how it performs on the table, how to use it on its own or in blends, and how to buy carrier oil wholesale without overspending.

Why therapists use jojoba as a massage oil

Jojoba is technically a liquid wax, made up of roughly 98% long-chain wax esters. In practice, that gives it a few qualities therapists like:

  • Light, non-greasy feel. It moisturises and softens the skin without leaving clients feeling coated.
  • Mild scent. Golden jojoba has a faint, nutty aroma that will not compete with essential oils or bother scent-sensitive clients.
  • Good keeping quality. Because it is not a typical triglyceride oil, it is less prone to going off than many plant oils when stored well.
  • Less staining. Many therapists find a lighter oil is easier on linen than heavier oils, though washing practices still matter.

Glide and absorption on the table

Jojoba sits in the middle for glide. It gives enough slip for long, flowing strokes but is taken up by the skin steadily, which suits techniques that need a bit more grip towards the end of a session.

If you want more glide for longer treatments, you can:

  • Apply a little more oil in stages rather than all at once.
  • Blend jojoba with a carrier that has more slip.
  • Warm the bottle in your hands or a bottle warmer before use.

Use what feels right for your technique and your clients’ skin.

Using jojoba neat or in blends

Many therapists use golden jojoba neat. Others use it as the base of a house blend, either to stretch a more expensive oil or to adjust the feel.

Simple approaches include:

  • Neat jojoba for a consistent, low-scent oil.
  • Jojoba with another carrier to change glide or cost per treatment.
  • Jojoba with essential oils for aromatic massage. Follow the supplier’s dilution guidance and your association’s standards for each essential oil.

Label any blend clearly with its ingredients and the date you made it.

Client care: patch testing and allergies

Jojoba is generally well tolerated, but any oil can disagree with someone. Good practice in the clinic includes:

  • Asking about allergies and skin sensitivities on your intake form, including nut and seed allergies.
  • Offering a patch test for new clients or new blends.
  • Stopping and wiping off the oil if a client reports discomfort.
  • Suggesting clients check with their health professional if they have a skin condition or concern.

For babies and young children, ask parents to check with their doctor or pharmacist before using any oil.

Keeping oil clean in the treatment room

Hygiene matters as much as the oil you choose. Decant from a larger container into small pump or flip-top bottles, and never pour used oil back into the main stock.

Keep your bulk container sealed, out of direct sunlight and away from heaters. If your room gets cold in winter, jojoba may turn cloudy or solid below roughly 7 to 10°C. This is normal and it returns to liquid when warmed. Our FAQ covers storage in more detail.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is jojoba oil good for massage?

Many therapists choose it for its light, non-greasy feel, mild scent and good keeping quality. It works well neat or as a base for blends.

Any oil can build up in linen over time. Jojoba’s lighter feel helps, but regular hot washing with a suitable detergent is still the best way to keep linen fresh.

Jojoba turns cloudy or solid below roughly 7 to 10°C. Warm it gently, such as by standing the bottle in warm water, and it will clear. This does not harm the oil.

Yes. Packs up to 19kg are available online, and regular or bulk orders are quoted. Send details through our contact form.
