BUYING GUIDE

Australian vs Imported Jojoba Oil: How to Choose

If you buy jojoba oil for a skincare brand, a clinic or a retail shelf, you will usually face one early decision: Australian or imported. Both can be good golden jojoba oil. The right choice depends on your product story, your budget and how much oil you need.

We have supplied golden jojoba oil since 1995 and stock both an Australian range and an Imported range in the same sizes. This guide sets out the practical differences so you can choose with confidence.

What both oils have in common

Golden jojoba oil is pressed from the seed of the jojoba shrub, Simmondsia chinensis. Whether it is grown in Australia or overseas, it is the same plant and carries the same INCI name: Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil.

Chemically, jojoba is unusual. It is made up of roughly 98% long-chain wax esters rather than the triglycerides found in most plant oils. That is why it is often called a liquid wax, and why it has a light, non-greasy feel on the skin.

Both of our ranges are golden (unrefined) oil, so they keep their natural colour and mild, nutty scent. If you are new to jojoba, our page on what jojoba oil is covers the basics.

Where Australian golden jojoba oil comes from

Our Australian golden jojoba oil comes from a grower network in New South Wales and Queensland. The business was founded by farmer shareholders, and that farming link is still at the centre of how we work. You can read more about it on our farms page.

The Australian range is processed simply:

  • Mechanically cold-pressed, with no heat applied.
  • No chemical solvents used to extract the oil.
  • Filtered to 1 micron for a clear, clean oil.
  • No additives of any kind.

For brands that want to say their jojoba is grown and pressed in Australia, this range gives you a clear and honest origin story.

Why imported jojoba is a sound choice too

Jojoba is grown commercially in several countries, and imported golden jojoba oil is widely used by cosmetic makers around the world. Our Imported Golden Jojoba Oil range is a legitimate, lower-cost option.

It suits buyers who:

  • Need golden jojoba at a sharper price point.
  • Are not making an Australian-origin claim on their label.
  • Use jojoba as one ingredient among many, such as in a blended massage oil or a rinse-off product.

Many of our customers use both ranges: Australian oil for a hero product, and imported oil for higher-volume lines.

How to decide

Ask yourself three questions:

  • Does origin matter to your customers? If your brand talks about Australian ingredients, choose the Australian range so your claim is accurate.
  • What is your cost per unit? If jojoba is a large share of your formula and margins are tight, the imported range may make more sense.
  • How much will you use? Larger packs lower the cost per litre in either range. For regular or bulk volumes, ask us for a quote.

If you are unsure, buy a 1 litre bottle of Australian golden jojoba alongside an imported bottle and compare them in your own products.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Frequently asked questions

Is Australian jojoba oil better than imported?

Not necessarily better, just different in origin, processing details and cost. Both are golden jojoba oil from the same plant. Choose Australian if origin matters to your brand, and imported if price is the bigger priority.

Yes. Both are Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, CAS 61789-91-1.
